Las Vegas: Nevada’s Desert Dreamland
Many places in the world come to be known for one or two things. For those who want ancient history and fine wine, then Rome would probably be a popular choice. Whilst those who are looking to sample the bright lights, big city buzz of a true global city, then New York will no doubt feature high on their list.
Similarly, Las Vegas â?? the Nevada desert city populated by half a million people â?? has come to be known as a place for gambling, entertainment and having a wild, hedonistic time.
In a city that boasts around 100 casinos and a staggering 100,000 hotel rooms, itâ??s fair to say that Las Vegas certainly does its best to cater for the many millions of tourists who arrive each year. Certainly, those who love nothing better than to sit around a poker or blackjack table will be like kids in a candy store, while those who like the simplicity of sitting at a fruit machine will be spoilt for choice too.
However difficult it is to get away from the gambling and late night party scene Las Vegas has come to be known for, the appeal of this city extends way beyond the round-the-clock casinos and bars.
First of all, Las Vegas doesnâ??t do things in half measures. Its wealth and ambition has turned it into a staggeringly impressive place to simply wander around and at night the famous Las Vegas Strip feels eerily like some sort of desert dreamland.
Scaled-down, replica versions of the Eiffel tower, Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty and countless other familiar edifices battle it out with pyramid-shaped hotels and imposing water fountains to create a truly mesmerising visual extravaganza.
Of course, the dazzle and glitz do have limited mileage. Furthermore, those who want to confine their time in the Las Vegas casinos to no more than a couple of nights will be glad to know there is a plethora of things to do in this remarkable city.
Las Vegas is a hotspot for variety shows, magic shows, rock concerts, festivals, musicals, ballet – every type of live performance you can think of.
For fine cuisine, there are few better places than Vegas. Many world-renowned chefs have set up dining establishments here and everything from steak and seafood to pizza and paella can be found in the countless restaurants and eateries across the city.
Nevadaâ??s star attraction may be in the middle of the Mojave Desert, but Las Vegas flights are plentiful and McCarran International Airport receives flights from many destinations in the US, as well as a number of key European destinations such as London Heathrow.
With so much to see and do in this desert dreamland, itâ??s little wonder 40million people choose to visit the city each year. Viva Las Vegas!
