Quincy seniors to present ‘Viva Las Vegas’

The young-at-heart seniors at 1000 Southern Artery in Quincy will present their annual spring musical revue at 2 pm RThursday, June 7, and 7 pm Friday, June 8, in the housing complex’s South Auditorium. They call themselves the Showtime Entertainers and their performances are free to the public. “This year, we are going to Las Vegas,” said director, choreographer and dancer Katharine “Renee” Craig, who is 79 and lives at 1000 Southern Artery. The opening number, “Viva Las Vegas,” features showgirls Barbara Brown, Shirley Cox, Dottie Eagles, Carocq Foley and Jean Pike in fishnet stockings and feathers. This is the 10th year Craig, a show business veteran, has put together a lively show with a lot of help from other “recycled teenagers” — seniors who live at the nonprofit church housing complex and a few who join in from nearby communities. As soon as last year’s production had been wrapped up, Craig got the idea for this year’s show: highlighting songs and dance numbers that many residents have seen in Las Vegas shows over the years. The two dozen numbers will include an excerpt from “Annie,” a performance by an Elvis impersonator (83-year-old Phil Worrick), the full chorus singing Elvis’ favorite gospel hymns, tap dancers hoofing it to the beat of “Singing In The Rain,” and lots of comedy. The 1½-hour program has a “Geritol break” instead of an intermission. For more information about the show, call 617-471-1000.
